Preview: Mickey Hart Band at the Roseland Theatre, 8/2

Mickey Hart does a great job of sharing the love with Portland. He makes sure to include our dainty little city on each of his West Coast tour itineraries, and always brings something new and exciting to the table. Some bands will play an underwhelmingly similar show each time they come to town — but the Mickey Hart Band is not one of those bands. Hart’s newest project, “Superorganism,” is yet another of the percussionist’s wild ideas. This time, he’s not using beats from outer space or chords from the Golden Gate Bridge. On “Superorganism,” Hart goes much, much deeper, using the human body to create music. To compliment the theme of the new album, Hart will be wearing an EEG cap during each show of the tour. His brain waves will be visible on a screen as well as audible as part of the music. As well as marking the release of a new album, the “Superorganism” tour also celebrates Hart’s 70th birthday! He will be inviting special guests on stage at several of the tour dates, so keep your eyes out for surprises! The band will also be joined by supporting act the Tea Leaf Trio (comprised of part of the group Tea Leaf Green). Head out to the Roseland Theater on Friday, August 2 to catch Mickey Hart and his new, crazy, wild project! For more information about “Superorganism” and the Mickey Hart Band, visit www.mickeyhart.net....

Preview: The Motet at the Wonder Ballroom, Saturday, July 13

At this point, if you haven’t yet heard of The Motet, you’ve been living under a rock, or at least living far away from civilization. Based in Denver, several of the band members have roots in Portland, so they really seem to enjoy giving our city some major love. The Motet will play some of the best funk you can get anywhere outside of New Orleans, and are to the West Coast funk community what Lettuce is for the Northeast: totally awesome and we’ll tell everyone about ’em. You might remember The Motet from the past couple of years when they toured around with their “Funk is Dead” act, taking classic Grateful Dead tunes and “puttin’ a little booty” in them (this is word-for-word how they described it). What you might not be as familiar with is their own original songs, which will — let’s be honest here — get everyone in the crowd laid. (The Portland Metronome doesn’t make empty promises.) This Saturday, July 13 , The Motet returns to Portland’s Wonder Ballroom, with opening support from Excellent Gentlemen. This show has a good chance of selling out, so we recommend getting your tickets ahead of time! See you all...

Now on to the weekly calendar:     Wednesday, July 10 — Joey Porter’s funky tribute to Stevie Wonder is back — and this time it’s free, outside, and in the middle of the street! That’s right, Portland Center for the Performing Arts is kicking off this year’s Music on Main Street series this Wednesday at 5 p.m.! The show will be held on Main Street, right next to the Schnitz. Get there early, because we bet this one’s gonna fill up! Later on that night, head to the Refuge for their 710 party, featuring World’s Finest, Dark Matter Transfer, Twisted Whistle, and DJ Mike Gong. Friday, July 12 — For yet another show in what seems to be shaping up to be a funky week, check out Orgone at Dante’s! If you’re more of the string band/Fruition sort, check out a brand new Portland supergroup called The Knots, featuring Brad Parsons, Jay Cobb Anderson and Tyler Thompson. They’ll be rockin’ a free show at the East Burn- one of the best bars to get down at. Also on Friday, the Goodfoot will be live streaming the Phish show from Jones Beach. They’re on the East Coast, so be prepared to show up around 5ish! Saturday, July 13 — Are you tired of funk yet? no? Good! Because the Motet is making their triumphant return to the Wonder Ballroom, and this time they’ll be joined by Excellent Gentlemen. Make sure you enter our contest before Wednesday for the chance to win two tickets to the show! Don’t forget, everyone — this weekend is the Oregon Country Fair! There’s lots of great music there this year, so if you can make it down, it’ll definitely be worth it!   ED. Note: One of Kara’s favorite bands from her days living in Vermont is headed this way...
